Travelling to Cape Town

Cape Town has one airport: Cape Town International (CPT). Direct flights to Cape Town International are available from destinations in Europe and the USA. Alternatively, you can fly into O.R. Tambo International Airport (JHB) in Johannesburg and take a domestic connecting flight to Cape Town. If you follow this option, allow enough time in your connection to clear immigrations and customs before checking in for your domestic flight to Cape Town. The domestic terminal is adjacent to the international terminal but it is some distance to walk. Three hours will give you a leisurely connection with some allowance for delays on incoming flights.

Note that it is peak season in Cape Town at the time of the conference. You are advised to make your bookings early to get good rates.

Transport in Cape Town

It is recommended to rent a car to get around Cape Town, especially if your accommodation is not within walking distance of the workshop venue. The SKA SA office has ample free parking. Additional parking is also available at the Vincent Pallotti hospital next to us.

Alternatively, transport to/from the airport may be arranged through your hotel or guest house, and taxis are available.

Recommended taxis:
Ismail Robinson     +27 83 953 2593 / +27 83 301 6906
Archie's Taxi         +27 83 978 5529
Rikkis                   +27 861 745 547

The most affordable option to travel between the airport and the city centre is the MyCiTi bus. However, the MyCiTi route does not extend to Pinelands yet.

Weather

Temperatures in December typically range from about a minimum of 15 degrees to maxima of about 25 degrees Celcius, but can go up to mid-30s.  Evenings can be cooler when exposed to the sea breeze.
